Initiated by the Fairmount Park Art Association. The two spheres were acquired in 1969 by the Fairmount Park Art Association through the cooperation of the Costa Rican government and the United Fruit Company. The spheres are from a site near Palmar Sur in the delta of Costa Rica's Disquis River. In Costa Rica, hand-shaped spheres like these are often set on graves or arranged in patterns suggesting astronomical alignments. IAS files contain a transcription of a nearby plaque, which gives background of spheres in Central America. IAS files contain an related excerpt from Penny Balkin Bach's "Public Art in Philadelphia," Philadelphia: Temple University Press, 1992, pg. 244.
