    Description: 
    Male figure of a wagon train leader. He is dressed in western clothing, sitting on a horse with a gun placed across the saddle. This equestrian figure is mounted on a very large limestone rock.

    Remarks: 
    Gift of Catherine and Miller Nichols, their daughters, and the sculptor, Gus Shafer. A bronze plaque on a nearby boulder reads: GOD SLUMBERS IN THE ROCK/HE BREATHES IN THE PLANT/HE DREAMS IN THE ANIMAL/HE AWAKENS IN MAN./--AN INDIAN PROVERB. Another nearby plaque reads: THE WAGON MASTER/L. E. "GUS" SHAFER--SCULPTOR/PRESENTED TO THE PEOPLE/OF KANSAS CITY/BY/MR. AND MRS. MILLER NICHOLS/AND/THEIR DAUGHTERS/KAY CALLISON/NANCY LOPEZ/ANN NICHOLS/LYNN NICHOLS/SEPTEMBER 8, 1973. At the base of the statue is a button-activated tape recording which tells the story of the Wagon Master and the Battle of Westport.
