Remarks:
The monument was erected by Colonel Thomas Washington Smith in memory of his Confederate comrades who lost their lives in the Civil War. Originally, there were four cast iron urns adorning the base of the monument, but only two remain. John P. Hall of Norfolk, Virginia helped construct the granite shaft. The zinc soldier was cast at a foundry in Bridgeport, Connecticut. IAS files contain copies of dedication speeches and biographical information on Thomas Washington Smith. For additional information see the Norfolk Landmark, Nov. 15, 1889 and The Virginia-Pilot, May 23, 1998, pg. B1.
