Sculpture garden featuring a central three-dimensional figural work and two concentric rings of bronze plaques set in beds of live plantings. Central sculpture: two life-sized figures, a pioneer and a statesman, facing one another and shaking proper right hands. Proper left hand of each figure is placed on proper right shoulder of the other. Pioneer wears fringed hide jacket and trousers, statesman wears formal tie, jacket and pants (ca. 1790s). Figures mounted on a circular concrete base at center of a circular bed of plantings; base encircled by eight inscribed bronze plaques set among the plants (all eight dedicated to first governor, Isaac Shelby). A paved circular court intervenes between these components and the outermost circular bed of plantings, where 56 additional plaques are interspersed among the foliage. Remarks:
IAS files contain transcriptions from the eight plaques dedicated to Isaac Shelby (1750-1826), first and fifth Governor of Kentucky. The statues depict in three dimensions the modern seal of the state of Kentucky (Shelby designed the original seal). Dedication of the sculpture coincided with the 190th anniversary of the commonwealth of Kentucky. IAS files contain additional citations to related newspaper articles, and copies of articles from Cincinnati Post dated March 12, 1981 and June 3, 1982.
