    Remarks:
In 1868 at a town meeting the money for a soldier's monument was appropriated. The final cost of the monument was $6,298.20, $3,000 of which was raised by subscription. The Honorable Edwin Mudge contributed almost half of the money that was raised by subscription. After considerable controversy about where to erect the monument, a decision was made to have it placed at the "Town House," now the Town Hall. Nearby plaque reads: Erected by the citizens of Danvers in memory of those who died in defence (sic) of their country during the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865. For related information see: Charles Rice's "History of the First Parish in Danvers, 1672-1872"; and a related article from the Danvers Mirror, Sept. 24, 1870.
