The sculpture was designed by Charlotte A. Tremper. Page & Southerland were the architects. $2,6000 was allocated for the erection of the memorial. Otfrid Hans Freiherr von Meusebach, born in Germany on May 26, 1812, became a citizen of the Republic of Texas and changed his name to John O. Meusebach. He was the founder of Fredericksburg, Texas on May 8, 1846 and also the town of Loyal Valley, Texas. On March 1-2, 1847, he negotiated a treaty of peace with 20 Comanche chiefs which protected the German settlements from Indian raids. He worked with German immigrants and was a State Senator in 1851. He died in May 27, 1897 in the town of Loyal Valley. For related information see Irene Marschall King's "John O. Meusebach, German colonizer in Texas," Austin: University of Texas Press, 1967.
