(Proper right statue base:) AD TOUSSAINT/SCULPTEUR (Proper left statue base:) GRAUX-MARLY/FABT DE BRONZES (Base front:) PERSEPHONE/IN ANCIENT GREEK MYTHOLO-/GY, SHE, AS THE DAUGHTER/OF ZEUS AND DEMETER, WAS/WORSHIPPED AS THE GODDESS/OF VEGETATION, RETURNING/EACH SPRING FROM THE REALM/OF HADES TO HERALD THE/SEASON OF GROWTH, AND IN/WINTER DISAPPEARING TO PASS/HER TIME, LIKE THE SEED,/UNDER THE EARTH. THE STATUE/WAS EXECUTED IN PARIS ABOUT/1840 BY ARMAND TOUSSAINT,/1806-1862. A GIFT OF JAMES/IRVING HOLCOMB - 1950 signed Founder's mark appears.
Description:
Standing female figure set on a limestone pedestal base in the center of a concrete octagonal pool. The figure of Persephone is draped from the waist down. Her proper right hand is raised and holds a lit torch of bundled faggots.

Remarks:
Butler University's Irwin Library's Rare Books and Special Collections files contain information on Holcomb Gardens. The sculpture originally came from France. J. I. Holcomb then acquired it from the Swift estate in Chicago. Armand Toussaint was the primary artist of the piece. It was cast by Graux-Marly and J. I. Holcomb and Arthur Lindberg were the landscape architects.
