    Remarks:
Monumental News articles indicate total cost $29,900, with an additional $60,000 of city government funds supplied. IAS files contain articles from Barre Daily Times (Barre, VT), Nov. 10 and Nov. 12th, 1924, and Monument and Cemetery Review, Nov. 1924, pg. xxi, 81, discussing the monument and its dedication.
The piece was erected to commemorate Barre youths who fought in World War I. In the fall of 1921, the Granite Quarry Owners Association sponsored a competition for the design of the monument. Carl Paul Jennewein designed the statue; John Mead Howells the setting. Jones Brothers Company was the primary contractor. G Tosi, E. Yuri and A. Dementi are credited with carving the monument. Over 12,000 attended the dedication ceremony held on Veteran's Day in 1924. The statue supplanted a temporary Victory Arch erected during the summer of 1919. The memorial has been nicknamed Bozo Jim or Bozo Joe referring to the strikebreakers (or bozos) who reportedly worked on the project during a granite workers strike.
