Inscription:  unsigned Description:  Johnny Kaw stands with both hands chest-high resting on a cradle scythe. He wears boots, a short-sleeved shirt, vest, and a belt buckle with the letter "K" on it. The boots, belt and scythe blade are painted black; pants and shirt are brown; vest, arms, face, hair, belt buckle, and scythe handle are painted a pale yellow. Filinger's book written for the Manhattan centennial in 1955. A miniature statue of Kaw was placed in the Park in 1955, as part of the Centennial celebrations, but was later damaged by vandals and removed. The 1966 replacement sculpture is based on drawings by E. J. Tomasch for the Filinger text. A graduate student of Tomasch's at Kansas State University, supervised the construction of the sculpture based on Tomasch's original designs. Glenn and Paul Klimek did the plaster and finishing work. The sculpture was dedicated as a part of Manhattan's annual Park Opening Day, May 15, 1966. Kids climb on the sculpture. IAS files contain a photocopy of George A.
