Remarks:
The cross commemorates the Huguenot settlement in Oxford from 1686-1696, and 1699-1704. The Huguenots emigrated from La Rochelle, France to London after the Edict of Nantes. There they met Robert Thompson, one of the original proprietors of Oxford, and he encouraged the Huguenots to settle in Oxford. The settlement was abandoned in 1696 after attacks by the native population, but by 1699 some families returned only to be driven out by renewed attacks in 1704. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Form C - Monuments questionnaire (dated Dec. 15, 1984) and Form A - Area and Site Survey.
