Description:
High relief of a standing female figure in classical dress. The figure, representing Liberty, stands on the head of Medusa, representing military conquest over oppression. In her proper right hand she holds a justice sword and in her raised proper left hand she holds a cluster of laurel leaves. The relief is mounted on a granite monolith that rests on a double granite plinth configured as crosses. A Spanish-American War cross is recessed into the back of the monolith.

Remarks:
Erected to the memory of Newport citizens who served in the Spanish American War. Files at the Newport Historical Society attribute this piece to Christian Petersen, an immigrant engraver working in New England. The memorial was designed and erected by the Tilden Thurber Company of Providence. For additional information see the Newport Mercury July 14, 1923 and July 21, 1923.
