Remarks:
The purchase and installation of the monument was approved by a city ordinance in 1909. The monument cost $4,300 and the money may have been raised by "private veterans and patriotic groups" and donated to the city. The monument was originally installed at the center of the intersection of 25th & Central, facing south. In 1957, because of increased traffic, it was moved just west of the intersection, on 25th, facing east. In 1992, it was removed and placed in storage because of street reconstruction. The monument was reassembled on May 25, 1994 at its present location by the city of Kearney in cooperation with Jerry Marlatt of Marlatt Machine Shop and John Randolph. IAS files contain related articles from the Kearney Hub (Kearney, NE), May 26, 1994; and May 27, 1994. For related information see: "Bassett's History of Buffalo County," v. 1.
