Description:
A multi-component site installation in a city park, which incorporates works by several artists. Central to the installation is a temple-like entrance consisting of three Doric columns, above which are Karl Bitter's "Races of Man", a series of crouching heroic limestone figures representing Black, Asian and Caucasian races. This entrance is set in a partial wall of brick, trimmed in stone. A large, low rectangle lies in front of it to the east, surrounded by a wrought iron fence. To the west of the entrance, shrubs and trees are planted amidst rubble of brick, chunks of carved limestone, cornices and capitals set into partial walls. A semi-circular pool of water extends west of this, surrounded by a wrought iron fence and Doric colonnade with 26 urn-topped columns. An additional pool is located beyond the colonnade. Two heroic full-length limestone female figures in Roman dress and two Ionic capitals are located in the area which surrounds the "ruins".

Remarks:
Proposal for the installation was first made in 1958 in response to a call for relocation of Karl Bitter's sculpture "The Races of Man" from St. Paul's Building in New York City (see IAS record IN000635). Tafflinger's proposal, submitted on behalf of Indianapolis, was accepted. The installation of "The Ruins" was completed twenty years later in 1978. The two heroic female figures in the installation were originally located on the old Marion County courthouse. IAS files contain copies of related articles from The Castleton Banner, Sept. 2, 1992 and the Indianapolis News, June 4, 1974.
