    Description:
Traditional Spanish Crucifix or "Cruceiro," like those found on Spanish crossroads, plazas and Church yard. The Crucified Christ faces the north. At the foot of the cross stands the Virgin of Mt. Carmel and St. James the Greater. St. James was chosen because he is the patron saint of Spain, and is the namesake of the donor's father. The Virgin of Mt. Carmel was chosen by the artist because she is the patroness of sea voyages, and the sculpture was shipped by sea. The sculpture stands on a specially designed base which protects it from root growth.

Gift of Dr. Manuel Macias, class of 1951 and Spanish professor at the University, in memory of his parents and brother. The piece was commissioned and created in Pontvedra, Spain. Marvin Swartz, Physical Plant Director at the University, designed the concrete base to prevent root growth from surrounding trees from altering the sculpture's alignment. IAS files include related excerpts from the University publications, Upbeat, Apr. 12, 1986, the Beacon, Apr. 17, 1986 and Portland Magazine, Spring 1993. IAS files also include dedicatory remarks and a related article from La Voz de Galicia (Galicia, Spain), June 17, 1986.
