    Description: 
    Standing portrait of Oliver Hazard Perry depicted just after he mounted the deck of the battleship Niagara at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. He has sideburns and his proper right hand is raised, index finger pointing skyward, as if giving a command. His proper left hand is at chest level with the flag of the battleship "Lawrence" wrapped around it. The sculpture is mounted on a tall square base.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture commemorating Oliver Hazard Perry is a duplicate of William Green Turner's 1885 sculpture of Perry in Newport, Rhode Island (IAS record 77006384). It was erected on the bicentennial of Perry's birth by the Erie Historical Society through a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission. Additional funding also included contributions from the City of Erie and others. Base was designed by Merle T. Westlake, with Stubbins Associates, architects. IAS files contain full transcription of names on rear base plaque.
