The "Artist-Designed Manhole Covers" project was a joint effort of the City of Minneapolis Arts Commission (administered the project), the Public Works Department (provided funds for the casting and installation), and Oxford Properties (sponsored the design contest and provided funds for prize money and dedication ceremonies). A state-wide juried competition was held for cover designs using the theme "Entertainment in Minneapolis." Seven of the covers are first place winners and four are second place winners. The covers were exhibited at the City Center, Aug. 23, 1984-Sept. 4, 1984 before being installed in Sept. 1984 by the Department of Public Works. IAS files contain descriptions of each cover, a map showing the location of each cover, and a copy of the Minneapolis Arts Commission Public Art Survey form describing the project. IAS images contain photos of covers by: Marcia Stone and Wes Janz; Karen Hansen; and Stuart D. Klipper.
