Remarks:
The monument honors the members of the Mier expedition who were killed in Mexico in 1843 and whose remains are buried in the tomb. In 1936 the state legislature appropriated $2,100 and the Centennial Commission appropriated $8,000 for the erection of the monument. Josset sculpted the bronze angel; Bourdelle sculpted the plaster mural. The tomb was designed by Page and Southerland. IAS files contain transcriptions of several related nearby plaques.
