Located Northeast corner of Texas & McNeil Streets, Shreveport, Louisiana
Remarks:
The sculpture is based on African-American and Anglo-American quilt motifs and was designed to complement the Kiosk #1 sculpture (IAS record LA000359) created by the artist in 1994/1995. The sculpture was created by LSU art instructor Barbara Abbott and designed in collaboration with Francis Drew. The sculpture was commissioned by the City of Shreveport as part of the Streetscape Art Island Bridge Lighting Project. Funding was provided through the 1988 Streetscapes Bond Issue, Shreveport's Downtown Development Authority and the Shreveport Regional Arts Council. The City of Shreveport provided the foundation and electricity.
Many of the objects used in the sculpture were collected and donated by students and the community. Raymond Davis was construction contractor; James Avant constructed the armature; and Randolf Johnson assisted with the wire lathe. LSUS students - Donna Moore, Ruth Foster, Amy Schmidt, Terri Stevenson, Betsy Hamilton, and Mandy Yeager -- assisted the artist on the project.
IAS files contain articles from Artbeat, Shreveport Regional Arts Council Newsletter (Oct.-Dec. 1995); and LSUS' paper "Almagest," Sept. 1994.
Nearby plaque reads: "Quilt Kiosk"/(copyright symbol) 1994/Created by Barbara Abbott and Frances Drew/from the collection of The Shreveport Regional/Arts Council commissioned through the City of/Shreveport.
