Attached to the back of the painting was the Herald Tribune obituary of Phineas P. Staunton, adopted son of Phineas Staunton (1817-1867). And, written on the side was, "son of the artist who painted this portrait of himself." The portrait is probably a self portrait of Phineas P. Staunton (1852-1935), but could have also been painted by his father.
