Remarks:
The artist was commissioned in 1977 by the Baltimore City Department of Housing and Community Development. The portrait was sculpted from life when the Marshall was sixty-nine years old. The inscription on a nearby plaque reads: SUPREME COURT JUSTICE/THURGOOD MARSHALL/REUBEN KRAMER SCULPTOR/19 - DEDICATED - 80/BY/CITY OF BALTIMORE/WILLIAM DONALD SCHAFFER - MAYOR. IAS files contain newspaper articles from the News American (Baltimore, MD), Oct. 21, 1977; The Sun (Baltimore, MD), May 16, 1980; and The Evening Sun (Baltimore, MD), May 16, 1980, A1-A3 and Oct. 29, 1979.
