Provenance:
Formerly in the collection of International Paper Company, 1166 6th Avenue, New York, New York until 1987.
Remarks:
Per Pace Gallery: this sculpture is number one of an edition of three; a wooden maquette was exhibited at Pace Gallery ca. 1976 or earlier; the finished sculpture was welded ca. 1976; and Pace Gallery sold the sculpture to the original owner, the International Paper Company. The International Paper Company, which was located at 1166 6th Avenue until 1987, was responsible for installing the sculpture in ca. 1979, and Tony Smith was present at the installation. Sasaki Associates designed the plaza and brick fountain basin. Space Design Group collaborated with Sasaki, and it's president Marvin B. Affrime selected the sculpture for the International Paper Company. The property is now jointly owned by New York Telephone and Marsh and McLennan.
The inscription on plaque located on southwest corner of fountain basin reads: Tony Smith / American 1912-1980 /Throwback / Aluminum Painted Black /1976-79.
