Remarks:
Mary Caroline Jenkins Townsend was born on Oct. 23, 1813, the daughter of Capt. Richard and Phoebe Waight Jenkins. In 1835 she married John Ferrare Townsend, a state senator and signer of the Ordanance of Seccession. They lived at "Bleak Hall" Plantation on Edisto Island, South Carolina and had four children. She died on June 16, 1889. This portrait was believed to have been painted sometime after her marriage.
