Description:
A series of 39 whirligigs set in a total of seven different sites along a street. Each whirligig is a painted metal cut-out perched high atop a metal pole. The whirligigs are kinetic and wind driven. Each whirligig was designed to represent a story, myth, legend or other source of cultural heritage. The whirligigs depict human figures, animals, fish, birds, dragons, mythological figures, ceremonial masks, totemic designs and architectural structures. Designs are abstract, figurative, representational and highly stylized.

Remarks:
The whirligigs were designed by Seattle high school students under the direction of artist Carl Smool. Participating schools included Franklin, Rainier Beach and Cleveland High Schools. Each whirligig bears a related story written by the student artist. IAS files contain complete transcriptions of individual student artist names, stories and location of whirligig. IAS files contain copy of related METRO publication "Rainier Valley Whirligig Arts Project" and article from Seattle Post Intelligencer, June 18, 1994.
