    Description: 
    A bench carved with naturalistic and abstract images. The three primary motifs are a leaf, spiral, and wave or water element. The bench rests on three sets of granite pavers which are sand set onto a concrete slab base.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was commissioned by the North Carolina Arts Council for $10,000 as part of the Art-in-State Buildings Program. The architect for the project was Ronald Stewart. The label affixed to an adjacent support pier reads: J. PAUL SIRES/American, b. 1955/1993 Leaf, Spiral, Wave/Carved granite/Artworks for State Buildings Collection.
    IAS files contain: a copy of the June 1988 commission contract; North Carolina Art Works for State Buildings Program Artwork Specification Form: Artist Contract, Schedule A, Jan. 11, 1993, including artist's statement; announcements and correspondence from the North Carolina Arts Council pertaining to the selection and commissioning of the sculpture, including preliminary drawings and diagrams; and a newspaper article from the Spectator June 9, 1994, pg. 8.
