Remarks:
The sculpture was created in recognition of Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution's contributions to the Challenger debris underwater search and recovery mission. The artist died in 1987 before the sculpture project was completed. Harold Vogel, founder of Wood and Stone Company, supervised the sculpture project after the artist's death. He oversaw the transfer of the artist's original bronze model into the stone sculpture. Blueprints for this undertaking were prepared by Stone International of Baltimore, Maryland. The Portuguese black granite was quarried and fabricated according the artist's original concept by Singranova in Carvalahal-Aphalhas, Portugal. Architect Harold Eisenbarth, Harbor Branch Construction Services Supervisor, designed the support platform for the sculpture.
