    Remarks:
Monument to Union General Nathaniel Lyon, a Civil War hero to the City of St. Louis. In May 1861, Lyon captured Camp Jackson, a secessionist bivouac, thus thwarting a planned Confederate attack on the U. S. Arsenal in South St. Louis. Lyon was killed August 10, 1861 at the Battle of Wilson Creek, near Springfield, Missouri. Monument was erected by the Camp Jackson Union Soldiers' Monument Association, and funded by popular subscription. Cost: $15,000. The original plan was for a free-standing equestrian statue of General Lyon on a granite base, mounted at the peak of an angle formed by two granite or marble walls topped with classical balustrades, estimated to cost $50,000. When the Camp Jackson Union Soldiers' Monument Association raised only $15,000, the design was revised. Roman Bronze Works cast one or both of the bronze plaques. Originally installed at the site of Camp Jackson, the monument was moved to Lyon Park in 1960 to allow expansion of St. Louis University.
