Description:
A totem pole with carved symbols representing the legends and tales of the ancient past of the Snohomish Indian Tribe from northern Puget Sound. Carvings include a bald eagle, mask, diving whale, standing bear, mink, chief with eagle feather headdress, diving seal, deer head with antlers, bow & three arrows, wood pecker, Indian with braids & buckskin shirt, river otter, whale swallowing canoe, and a snake.

Remarks:
The cost of this work was $6,000 which was raised by Everett-Snohomish County school children. The pole was still horizontal at the dedication ceremony on May 14, 1940, 85 feet long but 71 feet tall when sunk into the ground. In June of the same year the pole was erected. Nearby plaque reads: THIS POLE WAS CARVED BY/WILLIAM SHELTON/OF/THE SNOHOMISH INDIAN TRIBE/TULALIP/PRESENTED TO THE STATE/BY/WASHINGTON CONGRESS OF PARENT-TEACHERS/SPONSORED BY SNOHOMISH COUNTY PARENT-TEACHERS ASSOCIATION/PURCHASED THROUGH/CONTRIBUTIONS OF SCHOOL CHILDREN/THIS PLAQUE MADE BY/THE VOCATIONAL DEPARTMENT/SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL/EVERETT WASHINGTON/1940.
