Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned by C.S.U. Summer Arts '89 and made with the participation of faculty and students in the Ceramic Sculpture Workshop. It was constructed by pouring refractory cement around a wooden form in the shape of a ship's hull, and with the use of Kaowool (a high-tech insulation material) simultaneously burning the wooden form and firing the cement with propane burners. IAS files contain related articles from the Times Standard (Eureka, CA), Sept. 24, 1989, and Humboldt Stater (Arcata, CA), Fall, 1989, and exhibition brochure. Nearby plaque reads: "Humboldt Ship/John Roloff, 1989/Commissioned by C.S.U. Summer Arts/A Gift to Humboldt State University."
