    Remarks:
The sculpture honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters Degree from Oberlin College in 1965. The sculpture was funded entirely through donations, including a $3,000 grant from the Nordson Foundation. The sculpture was a result of efforts by the Oberlin Chapter of the NAACP, the Oberlin City Council, and the citizens of Oberlin, to create a tribute to Dr. King and his work in human rights. In early 1986, the City of Oberlin renamed East Vine Street Park, Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. The sculpture is the first phase of scheduled improvements to the Park, which was designed by landscape architects Louise Dunn and Edward Thompson. The sculpture was constructed by Burrell Scott of B. L. Scott Masonry and Construction Company. Henry Young worked as bricklayer and master craftsmen on the project. David Fantani and the Belden Brick Company specially made the bricks for the project. The park and sculpture were dedicated on July 19, 1987 as part of Oberlin's Heritage Festival. IAS files contain a related press release and funds expenditure list from the City of Oberlin, and a transcript of remarks from the dedication ceremony.
