Remarks:
Marker commemorates the site which inspired poet John Greenleaf Whittier to write "The Grave by the Lake" in 1867. Eaves designed the sculpture and executed the original in plywood; the model was sand cast in bronze by Samuel Eastman Foundry. The sculpture was commissioned and paid for by Harold Ley, Sr., a summer resident of Melvin Village. IAS files contain newsclipping from Granite State News (Wolfeboro, NH) dated Sept. 2, 1995 (pg. 1).
