Remarks:
Walker & Eisen served as architects for the building; Gladding, McBean & Company fabricated the terra cotta exterior. Johnson sculpted the two heroic figures. He was assisted by Gage, Paul and Annette Saint-Gauden, and Morgan. There is a discrepancy regarding the media of the sculpture. SOS! survey reports media as cast stone; related articles state media is terra cotta. The Fine Arts Building has also been known as the Signal Oil Building. IAS files contain copies of related articles from Los Angeles Times, Dec. 12, 1926; Shapes of Clay, Vol. II, no. 11, Dec. 1926; and The Skyscraper, Vol. II, no. 10, Dec. 1926. IAS files contain copies of related Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Downtown Public Art inventory form and excerpt from the CRA's "Public Art in Downtown", 1985, pg. 67.
