    Provenance:
Formerly located Lee Circle, St. Charles & Howard Avenues, New Orleans, Louisiana 1884- May 19, 2017.
    Remarks:
The monument was completed in 1884 at an estimated cost of $38,000 to $40,000, with all except $500 raised within the state. Fundraising efforts were spearheaded by the R. E. Lee Monumental Association. John Roy collaborated with the artist on the columnar shaft and base. The sculpture was dedicated Feb. 22, 1884 on Washington's birthday. By December 1952, the original cypress pilings supporting the monument were rotted, causing the base to crack and the column to lean 6 inches. Repair work was begun. The statue of Lee was removed, the pedestal dismantled and the old wooden pilings were replaced with steel and reinforced concrete. The refurbished memorial was rededicated on Jan. 19, 1954, the 147th anniversary of Lee's birth.
