    Provenance:
Formerly located Starr King Elementary School, Portrero Hill, San Francisco, California
    Remarks:
Thomas Starr King was a Unitarian preacher and was instrumental in keeping California in the Union during the Civil War. He is buried in the churchyard where the sculpture is located, which is recorded as a California Historical Landmark. The sculpture was commissioned in 1954 by the San Francisco Unified School District to be installed at the new Starr King Elementary School. In 1965, the sculpture was damaged by vandals and repaired on site by the artist. The sculpture was extensively damaged by vandals in 1970 and was removed to the artist's studio for repair. Because of the history of vandalism to the sculpture, the newly repaired sculpture was given on long-term loan to the First Unitarian Church, where it was installed in 1978 beside King's grave. Blanchard acted as architect for the school; Rosse, architect for First Unitarian Church, designed the base; and Sheedy Drayage served as contractor during the 1978 installation. IAS files contain copies of related articles from San Francisco Chronicle, Sept. 19, 1976 and Dec. 2, 1986; and San Francisco Progress, May 19, 1978.
