    Description: 
    A statue of the Virgin Mary atop a tall granite shaft. Mary stands on a globe with moon and stars, and crushes the head of a serpent with her heel. She wears long robes and a veil. Her hands are extended down and out. The shaft rests on an octagonal granite base on a circular cement foundation.

    Remarks: 
    Marble for the statue was quarried and sculpted in Carrara, Italy. The statue and shaft were erected by Rodriguez Brothers. The monument cost an estimated $2,000 and commemorates the one hundredth anniversary of the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. IAS files contain a related article from The Rattler, St. Mary's University (San Antonio, TX), April 7, 1954, which describes the planning for the monument, and a copy of the dedication brochure.
