    Description: 
    A series of five art-deco style reliefs on the wall of a jail feature allegorical figures symbolizing the function of the building. A central panel depicts Remorse as a nude male lying on his side with his hands wrists chained and his fists clenched. On the right, by his feet, Pity and Grief are represented by a mother and her two children. Her head is bowed as she ashamedly answers the queries of her child on her proper right, while the child on her proper left looks on the world with saddened eyes. Indifference is displayed by figures of honest laborers in the background, symbolizing the rest of society. The figures are led by a bearded man standing on the left, and each of the laborers has his implement of work, such as a spade or an axe. Only two of the surrounding four panels are still visible, and one depicts two figures crouched against one another.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was funded by the Public Works Administration for a cost of $835. Two of the panels surrounding the central panel are not visible as a result of additions that have been made to the original building. IAS files contain an article from the Mayville Sentinel, July 20, 1939.
