    Description: 
    A Confederate soldier stands in a relaxed position with his proper right hand on his hip and his proper left hand on the barrel of his rifle. The gun stands vertically with butt on the ground. The soldier wears a wide-brimmed hat, a cape, a knee-length coat, and a belt with a buckle. The sculpture is mounted on a tall square base.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture is dedicated to the memory of the Confederate dead of Franklin County. The monument was funded jointly by the Jubal Early Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and R. H. Fishburne. The sculpture was ordered from Italy. The base and foundation were created by Roanoke Marble and Granite Works. IAS files contain a transcription of the base inscription listing the names of companies composed of Franklin County men. IAS files also contain excerpts from two unpublished papers found in the files of the Franklin County Public Library.
