A grille, installed above the entrance doors to the Mitchell Library, with a low relief design based on the legendary Scandinavian Tree of Life. The tree, somewhat stylized, dominates the design. Four stags or harts are shown feeding on the tree or around it. Under the root at the right is a figure representing the giant who controls the fountain of wisdom, that springs from the base of the tree. He drinks water and grows wiser and wiser, and consequently more powerful and cunning. Under the root at the left, the Norse god Odin is represented consulting with a pot-bellied warrior god. A snake gnaws at the central root of the tree. A squirrel is also represented. As the tree forks, a male and a female figure are represented.
