    Remarks:
Still life painted by Katherine “Kittie” Maria Fain (1869-1913) of Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee. Kittie was the daughter of George Alexander Fain (1832-1901) and Eliza Ruth Moore (1834-1908). According to the Fain family historian, Kittie had a natural artistic talent and worked primarily in oils. It is not known at this time if Kittie had any formal artistic training while she lived in Tennessee, though it is possible that she may have received some sort of instruction in the nearby city of Knoxville as her contemporary Adelia Armstrong Lutz (1859-1931) is known to have. According to family history, Kittie’s family offered to send her to New York City for one year for artistic training on the condition that she abstain from marrying the Reverend James W. Richardson (1869-1906); Kittie did not accept her family’s offer and married the Reverend in 1906.
