Description:
A tree sculpture rises up to span the space between two buildings, forming an entranceway to a courtyard and supporting a 40 foot wide entablature. The tree has an elaborate trunk with many roots. In a hole in the tree trunk is a small gnome with a beard and mustache, wearing a pointed hat. The gnome is working on a piece of metal on an anvil in front of him. He holds the metal with his proper left hand, about to hit it with a hammer held in his proper right hand. The piece of metal flows off the anvil and downward to blend with the tree trunk. The trunk rises and splits into three major branches. One branch continues up vertically beyond the overhead span or entablature. The right and left branches arch to the sides to end on stone corbels attached to the surrounding buildings. The entablature is made of two beams of steel, separated by metalwork, with squares representing metopes and metal strips representing triglyphs.
