    Remarks:
The monument committee made up of Dayton's leading citizens, which included Orville Wright and Charles Kettering, raised $92,000. The monument is located within the 325 acres of park land bequeathed to the City of Dayton by John Henry Patterson, founder of the National Cash Register Company. Patterson was a champion of the city beautiful programs and sponsored community gardens and beautification projects in the neighborhoods where his employees lived. During the great flood of 1913, he turned his factory over to relief work, building flat boats for rescue work, organizing his employees who succeeded in saving lives, and providing food for flood survivors. He was a strong advocate of education and introduced domestic science and kindergarten activities in public schools. A copper box that contains the names of subscribers to the memorial fund, newspapers, booklets, photographs, coins, and information about Mr. Patterson, was placed in the base of the monument.
