    Remarks:
Gift of Hungarian families of Colorado, the Commemorating Committee of Denver, and several area firms. The quote on the stele from Abraham Lincoln comes from his Gettysburg address. The passage on the stele from Hungarian poet Michael Vorosmarty translates: "It should not be that so many hearts have shed blood in vain." Every October 25th, local Hungarians commemorate the 1956 uprising with a ceremony in Hungarian Freedom Park. IAS files contain copies of newspaper articles from the Denver Post, Oct. 28, 1968, which discusses the dedication; and Rocky Mountain News, Oct. 22, 1990, which discusses a remembrance of the Hungarian freedom fighters slain in the 1956 uprising; the ceremony, held in Hungarian Freedom Park, included candles burning in the candle holders at the base of the monument. IAS files also contain unpublished archival material and copies of unidentified newspaper clippings discussing the dedication of Hungarian Freedom Park in 1966 and the dedication of the monument in 1968.
