    Description: 
    An eagle, representing Victory, is perched with wings spread. The sculpture is mounted atop a tall shaft decorated on each side with symbols representing the principle elements of war, including firearms, armor and shields. The sculpture is set on a mound with steps leading up to it on one side. An iron staircase leads to the top of the sculpture.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture cost $250,000. It was installed by the federal government and the State of New York to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the United States victory at the Battle of Plattsburgh on September 11, 1814 under the command of Commodore Thomas Macdonough. The sculpture overlooks the site of Macdonough's victory. Architect for the project was John Young, Jr. IAS files contain the Plattsburgh Centenary Commission's booklet, "Dedication of the Thomas Macdonough Memorial," Aug. 18, 1926, pg. 7-15.
