Remarks:
IAS files contain a copy of The Hartford Courant (Hartford, CT), Oct. 10, 1991 discussing the history of the piece. The sculpture was donated by Mary Cheney, who had close ties to Manchester. Her family employed nearly a quarter of the Manchester population in the 1920s in their profitable silk manufacturing enterprise. Miss Cheney was known for her philanthropic activities. The statue was stolen on October 6, 1990; but subsequently found by police behind the Probate Court building. The work was repaired and reinstalled a year after its initial disappearance. The newspaper article references the foundry inscription as possibly reading "Pomponian Bronze Works, N.Y."
