Description:
Two female figures are installed atop an ornate, columnic base. The figures wear Classical garments and represent "Hope consoling Sorrow." Hope stands on a left with her proper right hand poised over the head of Sorrow, who kneels on the right. There is a medallion depicting Henry S. Potter affixed to the top of the base above the inscriptions. Mr. Potter is seen in proper left profile, wearing a suit, tie and long beard.

Remarks:
The monument marks the gravesite of Henry Sayre Potter and his wife, Harriet Benedict Potter. The cost was $6,000. Henry Potter was a prominent businessman in Rochester between 1850 and 1884. IAS files contain excerpt from The Friends of Mt. Hope Cemetery, v. 11, no. 2, Spring 1991, which includes a photograph of the sculpture before it was damaged.
