Description:
Full-length figure of a Civil War solider standing at parade rest. He wears a uniform, cap and a long overcoat. He has a moustache and a goatee. He holds the barrel of a rifle with his proper right hand; his proper left wrist rests on top of the rifle barrel. The stock of the gun rests near his feet. The bronze sculpture stands atop a multi-tiered granite base. On the front face of the highest tier is a bronze oval plaque featuring a bas-relief bust of Abraham Lincoln. He is depicted in proper right profile and has a beard.

Remarks:
Hailes cast the plaques, which were made from cannon. The portrait of Lincoln was done by Pickell. The monument was installed in 1870, and formally dedicated on May 30, 1872. The sculpture of the soldier was not installed until 1875. The initial installation cost of the monument in 1870 was $2,215; a total of $4,458 was raised to complete the project.
