Remarks:
In 1855, the Vermont State Legislature approved $2,000 to erect a monument to Ethan Allen, and later allocated an additional $2,000. The statue created in 1858 by Larkin Goldsmith Mead was unveiled at the Vermont State House on Oct. 10, 1861. However, by the late 1930s, it had begun to crumble and it was removed, and was apparently destroyed in 1941. Piccini was then chosen to create this replica, which was unveiled Oct. 29, 1941. Nearby plaque reads: Ethan Allen/By Aristide Piccini after/Larkin G. Mead/marble/8' high 1941.
