Description:
Pink granite steps lead up from street level to a platform on which sits a 150 foot white granite fluted column surmounted by a bronze funeral urn lit from within. Column has an internal elevator.

Remarks:
This monument, a tomb containing the remains of the American sailors, soldiers and citizens who perished aboard the prison ships of the British in Wallabout Bay during the Revolutionary War was dedicated in 1908 by President Taft. Erected with funds supplied by the Federal Government, the State of New York and the City of New York on land bestowed by John Jackson. Cost four hundred thirty-seven thousand dollars. Some repair work done in 1937. Monument committee: Prison Ship Martyrs.
