    Description: 
    Young, male, Confederate soldier standing at rest position. His proper left leg is slightly forward with bent knee. In his proper left hand he holds the barrel of a bayoneted rifle, with the stock butt resting behind his proper left foot. His proper right hand rests on his proper right hip and holds his hat.

    Remarks: 
    Commissioned by the Ladies Confederate Memorial Association. Funded by the Ladies Confederate Memorial Association and private contributions. Cost: $4,000. A competition was held and Caspar Buberl was chosen as the sculptor. George Julian Zolnay designed the four tablets for the base, listing names of soldiers buried in the University of Virginia Cemetery. IAS files contain copy of magazine article, Kuhlthau, A. Robert, and Harry W. Webb, "Sculpture in and around Charlottesville: Confederate Memorials," The Magazine of Albemarle County History 48 (1990), which details the commissioning, funding, creation, and dedication of the monument.
