Description:
A partially draped maiden holding a cornucopia from which water falls into a circular basin at her feet. From there the water drops to a larger circular basin which is supported by mermaids riding dolphins. Between these two basins the main shaft is adorned with carved cupids, bearded heads, nymphs, lion heads and winged cherubs. Water falls from the mouths of some of these figures into a large octagonal basin which forms the base of the fountain.

Remarks:
This fountain was adapted from and is almost an exact duplicate of a 1533 fountain in Italy by Niccolo Tribolo. The figure on the top of the Italian sculpture is completely nude, while the Wilmington sculpture is partially clad. A photograph accompanying the SOS! report of incised text indicates the fountain was presented to the City of Wilmington, erected in memory of Josephine Tatnall Smith, 1854, by her husband. IAS cataloger unable to determine correct execution date. Sculpture had been removed from fountain at time of survey.
