    (Base:) PERICE & HUNTLY (ERIE, PA) (On front of base, middle marble section:) ERECTED/TO THE MEMORY OF/THE DEFENDERS/OF OUR/COUNTRY AND FLAG/MAY 30, 1911 Founder's mark appears.
    Description: 
    A uniformed Civil War soldier and sailor stand side by side. The soldier holds the barrel of his rifle with both hands, proper right over proper left, the rifle but resting by his feet. He carries a pack on his back. To his proper left is the sailor, his proper right arm bent and holding a telescope, his proper left hand raised to his face to shade his eyes. The sculpture is a dark brown and is mounted upon a tall square stone base with a marble center section. Upper and lower edges of base are rough hewn.

    Remarks: 
    The monument commemorates soldiers and sailors of the Civil War, and was funded by the Grand Army of the Republic, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Women's Relief Corps. The sculpture was cleaned in 1960 and 1975, and in 1985 with glass beads.
